"An Accidental Artist." That's how Peggy Wyman chooses to describe herself. The 'accident' happened when she responded to a flyer for a willow basket-making class. As a writer and novelist, Peggy was beginning research at the time for a book titled Mission: The Birth of California, the Death of a Nation. Published in 2002, it is based on the history of the Kumeyaay natives and her main character in the novel is a young basket-weaver. The class Peggy chose to attend was taught by traditional artists of that nation and the first basket she made served as her talisman during the writing of the book. It sparked an unexpected interest in basketry that has led her to study many different forms of the art. Peggy ultimately discovered that the one she most prefers is pine needle basketry.

"My first attempt at making a pine needle basket was quite awful," she says. "The result was so lumpy and lopsided that I shoved it in a drawer and never finished it. I was convinced that pine needle basketry was not for me." It took another year before she tried again. During that time she made seven or eight other types of baskets and that made all the difference. "Although my second pine needle basket was only slightly less lumpy and lopsided, I realized I loved the process. I loved the silky feel and heady aroma of the needles, the soothing repetition of the stitching and the way my mind emptied and quieted. I was hooked."

"In the act of creating a novel, a writer must make literally thousands of choices, from what characters look like to how they act and react in various situations. To be successful, a writer has to come up with choices that create something new, something 'fresh'. In making such choices I often find myself up a blind alley story-wise and have to retrace my steps. Sometimes this means throwing out days of work. I now use basketry to erase the old story idea and sweep away the frustrations of losing ground. Then I can seek new inspiration, and rejuvenate myself, for the next session at the computer."

"At other times basketry is my meditation and contentment. It's also the way I reground myself in the real world after spending hours in my head, playing stories. Starting a basket begins a conversation between the pine needles, the thread and my hands, with the materials directing the form they wish to take. The basket is done when that conversation ends. Thus each one is a story of its own, written in pine needles and bound together by the connection between you the owner, myself the artist, and the Muse within us all."
