Passion and talent have led Sallie Hantz, an Arizona native, to the greatest heights of her career and through journeys around the world. Since her humble beginnings in Globe, the youngest of five children, Sallie's love for art has fueled her to lofty accomplishments in no less than two professions.
Sallie was in her early teens when her family moved to Los Angeles and, by then, had come to recognize her insatiable fascination with color, line and form. Sallie had already demonstrated her remarkable talent for art and decided that her future would be in painting. With reasonable concern for her daughter's future, however, her mother kindly encouraged her to consider a corollary interest. At a time when artists were known mostly for starving, she believed that Sallie's attraction to hair design would lead to a much more practical vocation. It was still, after all, about color, line and form.

So it was, after working her way through cosmetology school, that Sallie quickly found herself at a prominent Beverly Hills salon. With less than a year's experience, however, she was invited to teach for one of the world's most distinguished hair designers. While demonstrating her avant-garde styles to the top hairdressers in Hollywood, and creating for numerous celebrities such as Ester Williams, Sallie continued to paint and master her skills with a brush. She also decided to begin her own school for hair design. With the love and support of her wonderful husband, also a notable designer, they quickly created a chain of five very successful cosmetology schools throughout California and Nevada. Sallie and Peter Hantz were now successful entrepreneurs.
The 70's were very busy years for Peter and Sallie. As they continued to expand their schools they were sponsored by Revlon on a national tour of classes and demonstrations and traveled twice to Europe to compete in the International Hairdressing Olympics. Then, subsequent to her second competition in Milan, Italy, Sallie was interviewed by Barbara Walters for a TV special on CBS. All the while she continued to paint.

Sallie had worked with notable artists such as Leon Franks and Jan Seather in Malibu and Laguna and now, in the early 80's, traveled to New York to study at the Student Art League. There she met and painted with David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw, who remain friends and mentors to this very day. Peter and Sallie have long since sold their schools and now paint full time in their beautiful home just outside Sedona. With numerous awards, countless collectors, and too many honors to mention, they still might consider their greatest success the return to Arizona.
With Sallie's stellar accomplishments as a painter, a hairdresser and an entrepreneur, we at Spiritwind Art Gallery are humbled and honored to know and represent this uniquely gifted and most remarkable woman. We thank you very much for pausing to enjoy her paintings and appreciate that for which we've become so very grateful.
